Land and Sea

2019's cruise duties will begin in Singapore and end in Southampton taking in South East Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Scandinavia.  See you on Princess Cruises.

2018 saw Ian take three contracts: the first sailing out of Melbourne, Australia to New Zealand and ending in Singapore.  Then three months of Alaska and lastly a trans-pacific contract back down under.

2017 proved a very productive year!  Sailing on the STAR and CROWN PRINCESS cruiseships.  Performing as a featured solist, visiting the Hawaiian Islands, Vancouver, Mexico followed by a European tour taking in the sights and sounds of Scandinavia, Northern and Southern Europe! Lots of amazing people met and a wide variety of music played.

In 2016 - Ian successfully completed a six month tour, as show band guitarist, on the Carnival Pride Cruise ship based out of Baltimore, MD, USA. The ship sailed the US East Coast and took in many ports in the Bahamas. With up to four shows a day, Ian demonstrated his musical versatility playing anything from jazz standards through funky, Bruno Mars hits to Van Halen's crazy guitar solos!  After a short holiday Ian 'jumped-ship' to Princess Cruises and performing as featured soloist on both acoustic and electric guitars.  With a voice that lends it’s self to many music genres and a passion to play many different styles of guitar - Ian loves the variety that these opportunities afford.

The Early Years

Giving up the piano for failing to practice aged 7; Ian was coerced by his mother to take up the guitar. He's been playing and singing ever since!  He began musical training with the highly regarded and hugely experienced guitarist: Peter Sills. Lessons consisted of playing in small groups and one-2-one private guitar tutoring.  Sills' love of music, experience growing up above a jazz club, to touring America - penning hits for Cliff Richard and Olivia Newton-John - proved a wonderful inspiration for all his students.  This foundation included many concerts and gigs with other children across North London and Essex with the highlight of competing in the final of  the ‘Canon’s Cup’ talent competition (Brentwood, Essex).  At age 19, Ian’s love of guitar and performing led him to turn his attention to fully pursuing a music career.

Vocational Training

Departing Sills' tuition, Ian proceeded to further his education by studying music privately, teaching himself advanced guitar techniques and developing his singing voice.  His lead and rhythm skills were put to the test working across London in Folk, Soul and Rock covers bands.   Everything from old-time waltzes, classic Soul tracks like, ‘In The Midnight Hour’ to Rock anthems - ‘shredding’ where required!  Also during this period Ian’s fascination with jazz led him to absorb the music of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and the works of great composers such as Gershwin, Cole Porter and Richard Rodgers.  This was augmented with studying the artistry of guitar legends like Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass.

Function Bands and Further Education

In 2003, Ian setup his own Function Band acting as band leader, scoring parts for vocal, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums. 'Mach 5' (not sponsored by razor blades!) performed at many engagements across the UK including at Tattersall’s (Newmarket Racecourse) and for the Jordan F1 Grand Prix team.  After 3 years and feeling he still had a lot to learn - Ian moved into a period of formal study with the Open University.  This proved invaluable for other music ventures including his next function band called, ‘Let’s Face The Music.’  Set up in 2009, with more detailed arrangements of classic hits and a huge repertoire at his disposal the band took to playing in many diverse engagements across Suffolk and Essex.

Jazz and Other Credits

Aside the function work Ian has been heard playing in solo jazz gigs adopting the crooner role and entertaining in jazz duos / trios.  Performances in theatres, festivals, hotels, churches and pubs.

Other credits include composition work for an independent film company, working with the Suffolk Sinfonia Orchestra and producing charity shows including Jazz Nights and tribute events to ABBA and The Beatles.

Church Music

Ian has been leading, playing and singing worship in Church for many years.  The choral tradition of hymns has sharpened Ian's use of backing vocal harmonies and the contemorary feel of songs by modern writers like Chris Tomlin, Brenton Brown and Stuart Townend have coloured Ian's use of guitar effects and textured lead playing.
